A Public/Private Partnership That Works: The NCERC Story

NCERC was established in the Research Title of the 1997 Farm Bill to support the development and commercialization of new technologies and products for the conventional corn-ethanol industry. Doors opened in 2003 and work began on a variety of projects that included government-funded efforts and contractual research with the private sector.

The year of 2009 prompted a major shift in funding as nearly all of the public funds that NCERC relied on to operate was defunded. The NCERC business model shifted immediately to an independent funding source that involved working primarily with the private sector.

Now, NCERC's impressive portolfio includes clients from start-ups, Fortune 50 companies, and everyone in between. Their work is diverse and includes projects in corn-ethanol. advanced biofuels, biochemicals, and biomaterials from a variety of feed stocks.

More than 65 technologies have passed through NCERC's doors and are generating in excess of $5B in annual revenue and have created or retained 5000 jobs.
